Tuesday we started the freedom trail in lower Manhattan at City Hall where it was once believed that Nathan Hale was executed. They now think it was somewhere else but there is a monument there that we couldn’t see due to construction. There was also a large number of prisoners held there. We progressed up the block to St Paul’s Church. Then to the Trinity Church where Hamilton is buried. This is the church that Washington attended and a presidential seal was painted to go over his pew. From there we went to Federal Hall National Memorial. Here the first Continental Congress met. Here Washington was inaugurated, Here the Bill of Rights were ratified. It was an amazing building but when we added the history there was a little reverence. From there we went to Golden Hill, commemorated by a plaque on the wall of a building. The next stop was Fraunces Tavern. Here the Sons of Liberty Met, many period gatherings were held there. Washington chose this place to bid farewell to his troupes. Several of the cabinet positions in the early Presidency had rooms here. Then to Bowling Green where King George’s statue stood that was pulled down to make bullets. The Wall Street Bull was right there so we got a picture. The next point on the map is the water in front of the Statue of Liberty where the first submarine battle took place. Trail to continue.....
